Looking into the needs of the North East Region, Regional Centre, Guwahati embarked on the exercise of producing programs which are relevant to local needs. Three programs were formulated:

It is a fact that diabetes has spread far and wide across the globe and India is soon emerging as the diabetes capital of the world. After diagnosis of the disease and while treatment is going on, the patient and his family need support and guidance on sustaining the treatment since they would not be able to go to the hospital on a regular basis. This program is targeted at preparing a cadre of community workers who will render such service in the local community. They may also be employed in diabetes clinics and district hospitals. Besides employment, even the common man who has diabetes or his family members can study this program to assist a diabetic patient at any point of time. The specific objectives of this program are:
The program duration is 6 months.
The program is jointly launched by School of Health Sciences, IGNOU, New Delhi and Guwahati Regional Centre and coordinated by Educational Development of North East Region Unit (EDNERU), IGNOU.
- to impart knowledge about the epidemiology of diabetes.
- to provide an understanding of the causes leading to diabetes.
- to give a detailed knowledge of the effect of diabetes on various organs of the body.
- to provide knowledge of the management of the disease in relation to diet, footcare, eyecare etc.
- to equip learners with interpersonal communication skills, which will facilitate psychological well being of patients.
