Need Based Programs initiated by Guwahati Regional Centre
Looking into the needs of the North East Region, Regional Centre, Guwahati embarked on the exercise of producing programs which are relevant to local needs. Three programs were formulated:
    • Certificate in Diabetes Care for Community Workers (Completed).
    • Certificate in Interior Design (In process)
    • Certificate in Handmade paper items (In process)

 Certificate in Diabetes Care for Community Workers (CDCW).
It is a fact that diabetes has spread far and wide across the globe and India is soon emerging as the diabetes capital of the world. After diagnosis of the disease and while treatment is going on, the patient and his family need support and guidance on sustaining the treatment since they would not be able to go to the hospital on a regular basis. This program is targeted at preparing a cadre of community workers who will render such service in the local community. They may also be employed in diabetes clinics and district hospitals. Besides employment, even the common man who has diabetes or his family members can study this program to assist a diabetic patient at any point of time. The specific objectives of this program are:
  1. to impart knowledge about the epidemiology of diabetes.
  2. to provide an understanding of the causes leading to diabetes.
  3. to give a detailed knowledge of the effect of diabetes on various organs of the body.
  4. to provide knowledge of the management of the disease in relation to diet, footcare, eyecare etc.
  5. to equip learners with interpersonal communication skills, which will facilitate psychological well being of patients.
The entry qualification is 10+2 pass.
The program duration is 6 months.

The program is jointly launched by School of Health Sciences, IGNOU, New Delhi and Guwahati Regional Centre and coordinated by Educational Development of North East Region Unit (EDNERU), IGNOU.


Guwahati Regional Centre in association with the Tool Room & Training Centre and Hero Honda Ltd has been conducting Certificate in Motorcycle Maintenance & Repair.

 Certificate in Interior Design (Under preparation)
Many indigenous art and craft of the North East can be attuned in creative ways to showcase the uniqueness of these. To achieve this, it is necessary to prepare persons with the competency and skills of interior design. Besides, the actualization of aesthetic capabilities, this will enable them to work as service providers and in various locations, as event managers.
 
 Certificate in Handmade paper items (Under preparation)
Sustainability and environmental protection are themes of global focus. In developing countries, the erratic use of plastic is a matter of deep concern. Handmade paper is being employed as a desirable alternative to the use of plastics and other synthetic materials. There are only a few work units spread across the country. Bringing this industry into focus and making it popular is being attempted through this effort. The industry can also employ people equipped with appropriate skills on Handmade paper items.
